Transmission Restoration Or Replacement With Automotix

It is more convenient transmission replacement instead of attempting to repair it. You will know if it requires replacement or repair when it starts slipping or if the car stalls. There are two types of transmission: automatic and manual. An automatic transmission shifts by its own, whereas, a manual transmission is operated with a gear shift. The basic tools that are necessary while replacing a transmission are:

  • Basic wrench set,
  • A torque converter holding tool,
  • Floor jack,
  • Jack stands,
  • Transmission jack

Below are some of the few steps to replace a transmission:

  • Raise the car off the ground, take the help of a floor jack and put it under the back and front of the car so that you can reach the transmission.
  • Release the fluid cables attached to the radiator and the link cables attached to the transmission. With the help of a wrench remove the u-bolts from the rear end and slide away the drive shaft from the transmission.
  • Pull out the speedometer gear assembly and place the jack below the transmission pan. Raise the transmission and take off the cover of the lower bell housing. Also, take off the torque converter bolts, bell housing bolts, rear transmission mounts and the four cross member bolts with the help of a wrench.
  • While moving the transmission jack to the back of the car, lower the transmission. Make sure the transmission clear the car and everything is unhooked.
  • Take out the old transmission and put the new one on the jack. As you slide the transmission under the car, lift it. While turning it until it clicks, hold the torque converters.
  • Place back the cross member.
  • Put back the vacuum lines, if in case you have replaced the cable linkage. Take out the jack stand and lower the car.
